Responding to arguments: the need (or lack thereof) for college education

To begin your responses, please read the following comment attached to the article read in class today:
"That's a good part of the reason I think the writer of this piece is one of the biggest imbeciles I've ever encountered. Lots of people go to college and have even professional jobs as they do that. Some I know do IT work and minor or even major in subjects like history. A simplistic utilitarian perspective may not be the best for gauging intellectual, and/or cultural/personal development. We can't wind up with a country full of illiterates and troglodytes, though we're getting there by leaps and bounds."
Share your opinion on this topic. Do people need college educations? Whether or not they need it, should they have a right to and encouragement toward pursuing and completing college educations? Are there any circumstances in which it is useful to have a liberal studies background? Can you use things you learned in areas which are not your major's curriculum in your daily or professional life?

  1. Suzanna,
I think that now-a-days it is important to have a college education. No i don't think it is important for a lot of jobs but as far as social class and money is concerned, then yes the higher the education the better. I honestly believe that having education as a fall back is a great idea for people in stock, for example. I also believe that in some circumstances having a educational background is not as important especially for jobs that will always be needed in entry level positions such as people in agriculture and food processing. To me that's something that you can simple learn by example and experience not by sitting in the classroom for hours on end reading books and writing and doing math equations that has no relevance to what you will be doing in the real world.
